Sanur's food scene has four layers: beachfront cafés along the car-free promenade, the restaurant strip on Jalan Danau Tamblingan, family-run warungs on the lanes behind, and the Sindhu night market. Expect around IDR 25,000–50,000 for a warung plate, around IDR 60,000–120,000 for a restaurant main on Tamblingan, and mains from around IDR 170,000 at the beachfront dining rooms. Most places take walk-ins; book ahead only for the beachfront and steakhouse tables at dinner, and for evenings in July–August and over Christmas and New Year. Sanur eats early: the famous Warung Mak Beng closes by 17:00 and most kitchens wind down before 22:00.

Sanur has been feeding visitors for longer than anywhere else in Bali, and it shows in the range. There are warungs that have served the same dish for decades, Italian and French kitchens run by people who came for a season and stayed, sourdough-and-flat-white cafés, and beachfront tables where the only thing on the menu that matters is the view.

What Sanur does not have is a scene. There is no strip you have to queue for and no restaurant that requires a plan weeks out. Eating here is a matter of walking out of the gate and deciding on the way.
Places change hands, so we keep this page honest: everything named below was open and cooking in August 2026. Our concierge keeps the day-to-day recommendations, including which kitchens are good with children and which will deliver to the villa.
Where do you eat breakfast in Sanur?
On the beach. Sanur faces east, so the promenade cafés serve breakfast with the sunrise over the water: Genius Cafe and Soul on the Beach are the reliable beachfront names, both open from 7:00, both strong on smoothie bowls, eggs and proper coffee.

Because the promenade is car-free and completely flat, breakfast becomes a walk or a cycle rather than a drive. For a lot of guests this turns into the fixed point of the day: out early, eat by the water, back before the heat.
Away from the sand, Jalan Danau Tamblingan handles the bakery side of things: Daily Baguette bakes French croissants and baguettes daily at its two shops on the street, and the long-established Cafe Batu Jimbar is the place for an Indonesian breakfast of bubur ayam or lontong sayur. The morning market at Sindhu is the other version entirely: fruit, produce, and stalls cooking for people on their way to work, at its best not long after dawn.
What is the most famous restaurant in Sanur?
Start with Warung Mak Beng, near the north end of the beach, which has served exactly one meal since 1941: fried saltwater fish, fish head soup, rice and sambal, around IDR 55,000 the set. It opens at 8:30 and regularly sells out before its 17:00 close.

There is usually a queue and no menu decision to make, which tells you most of what you need to know. Go at an off hour, late morning or mid afternoon, and expect to share a table.
Beyond the famous one, the lanes behind Jalan Danau Tamblingan are full of warungs with no reputation at all and very good food: nasi campur, mie goreng, satay and grilled fish at around IDR 25,000–50,000 a plate. Busy at lunchtime with people who live here is the reliable signal.
What are the best restaurants in Sanur right now?
Most of them line Jalan Danau Tamblingan and the streets just off it: Cork French Tavern for bistro classics like wagyu beef bourguignon, Naga Eight for Cantonese roast pork, Santorini for Greek, Hanoi by MeVui for Vietnamese, and Massimo, the Italian institution that has been making its own gelato in Sanur since 1996.

Mains on the strip mostly land around IDR 60,000–120,000 before tax and service, noticeably less than the fashionable west coast charges for a comparable plate. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free requests are normal here rather than exotic; most kitchens are used to them.
The scene is moving too: 2026 alone has brought Junsei, a Japanese izakaya grilling yakitori over charcoal, the steakhouse Luca Bali, and Pasar, a wood-fired South American kitchen. New openings are the one category where booking a table in the first months is worth it.
Where can you have dinner by the beach in Sanur?
Byrd House, on the sand beside Segara Village Hotel, is the classic beachfront dinner: Mediterranean and Italian plates with mains from around IDR 170,000, best reserved ahead for an evening table. Blossom Steakhouse, on the sea-facing balcony at Icon Bali, is the special-occasion choice, with dry-aged steaks from around IDR 210,000.

The ordinary promenade cafés also run into the evening, serving grilled fish and cold Bintang a few steps from the sand at café rather than beach-club prices. Be honest with your expectations: Sanur faces east, so the show here is sunrise, and evenings on the promenade are about lamplight and the sound of the water rather than a blazing sunset.
What time do restaurants close in Sanur?
Early, by Bali resort standards. Kitchens are busiest between 18:00 and 20:00 and most wind down by about 21:30 or 22:00; this is not a town for a ten o'clock table, and the quiet suits it.

Plan dinner on the early side and you will have the full choice of tables. Whether you need to reserve is answered in the questions further down; the short version is that Sanur runs on walk-ins, with a handful of exceptions at dinner. Most places take bookings over WhatsApp, and the concierge will happily make the call for you.
Is there a night market in Sanur?
Yes, the Sindhu night market, a short ride from the villa, and it is the best cheap dinner in town. From about 17:30 the market fills with stalls cooking satay, nasi campur, bakso, grilled chicken and martabak, with most dishes at around IDR 15,000–30,000; it is liveliest between roughly 18:30 and 20:30 and winds down by 22:00.

Bring cash in small notes: IDR 100,000 buys a generous dinner for two with fresh juices. Tables are communal, sharing with strangers is normal, and prices are fixed, so there is no haggling to do.
The same site works as a produce market in the early morning, which makes it the better source of fruit, vegetables and fish for anyone cooking at the villa.
Can you eat well in Sanur with children?
Easily. Balinese restaurants are warm with children as a matter of course, portions are shareable, plain rice and noodles are always available, and many places have space for a child to be a child.

The beachfront cafés work particularly well for families: the tables are outdoors, the sand is right there, and nobody minds a toddler who does not want to sit down.
For fussier eaters, nasi goreng, mie goreng and grilled chicken appear on nearly every menu in town, and the gelato counter at Massimo settles most end-of-dinner negotiations.
What if you would rather eat at the villa?
That is a genuine option here rather than a fallback. The villa has a fully equipped kitchen, the concierge shops for groceries on request, and a private dinner for up to six guests per villa can be arranged with at least two days' notice.

Supermarkets and the mall at Icon Bali are a few minutes away by car, and the morning market is the better source for fruit, vegetables and fish. A private chef can also be arranged through the concierge.
Many guests end up doing both: out for breakfast on the promenade, in for dinner by the pool. With three bedrooms, a long dining table and a garden, cooking at the villa is not a compromise.
Frequently asked questions
