Sanur to Nusa Penida & Nusa Lembongan

The crossing takes 30–45 minutes depending on the boat and the sea. Most services land at Banjar Nyuh pier on Penida's north-west coast, close to Toya Pakeh and the road to the western viewpoints; a few use Buyuk or Sampalan further east, so check which pier your ticket names before arranging pickup on the island.

For Nusa Lembongan the crossing is 30–40 minutes with operators such as D'Camel, Rocky, Glory and The Tanis, at broadly similar fares. Boats to the Gili Islands and Lombok also start here: expect 2.5–4 hours depending on the operator and whether the boat calls at Penida or Lembongan on the way, and roughly IDR 400,000–700,000 one way.

The two-storey terminal, shaped like the hulls of Sanur's traditional jukung boats, has air-conditioned waiting areas, toilets, food stalls, luggage storage and an official taxi counter. Expect a small harbour fee of around IDR 10,000–25,000, paid in cash, on top of your ticket.

Check-in is usually at your operator's own counter rather than one central desk, and staff then walk the group through the terminal to the pier together. One quirk to know: ride-hailing apps can drop you off but are restricted from picking up at the terminal, so plan your ride back via the taxi counter, a driver, or a villa transfer. A dry bag is still worth packing; the pier keeps your feet dry, the crossing can still throw spray.

Return tickets are often discounted against two singles, and operators sell direct as well as through the big booking platforms. Reconfirm the exact departure time, check-in time and pickup point a day or two before you travel; schedules shift with the season, and boats leave on time or occasionally early.

Fast boats also depend on the sea. Crossings are sometimes delayed or cancelled in rough conditions, so never schedule a return crossing on the same day as an onward flight, and keep a small cash reserve: a small arrival contribution may apply on Nusa Penida.

Operators ask you to check in 45–60 minutes before departure, and 90 minutes is safer in high season with luggage. From Sanur that means a short transfer; from Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud it means leaving in the dark and hoping the traffic behaves. Missing a boat usually costs most of the day, and that risk is the single strongest argument for sleeping nearby.

The practical version: sleep properly, have breakfast, take a short ride to the harbour, and start the island day rested.

Nusa Penida is much bigger and rougher than photographs suggest, and the roads to the famous viewpoints take real time. Trying to see the west and east coasts in a single day means spending most of it in a car. Picking one side, or staying overnight, gives you a far better day.

Nusa Lembongan is smaller and gentler, and works better as a relaxed day trip: beaches, mangroves and snorkelling within a short ride of where the boat lands.
