The transfer is the part of a Bali holiday nobody plans and everybody remembers. Most long-haul flights land in the early hours or late at night, the terminal is busy, and the drive that follows can be twenty minutes or two hours depending on where you are going.

The pattern is fairly reliable. Flights landing after about 21:00 or before 07:00 meet a near-empty bypass, which is when Sanur feels almost next door to the airport. Mid-morning and midday are usually easy too. The slow window is the stretch from roughly 16:00 to 19:00, when the roads around Denpasar clog, and the days around Galungan and the Christmas and New Year peak can slow things at any hour. Every honest time estimate for Bali comes with that caveat, and this one is no different.
For departures the same logic applies in reverse: for an afternoon flight, leave Sanur with an hour of margin rather than counting on thirty minutes. And note Nyepi, Bali's day of silence in March: the airport closes for the day and no vehicles are allowed on the roads, so never plan to arrive or leave on it.

The airport taxi desk in the arrivals hall is the simplest walk-up option: you name the destination, the fare is set before you move, and staff walk you to the car, so there is no negotiation at the kerb. Metered Bluebird taxis, Bali's most reputable taxi firm, price similarly on this run; a mid-2026 quote for Sanur came in around IDR 150,000.
A pre-booked driver costs a little more and removes every decision: someone standing in arrivals with your name, a price agreed before you fly, help with the bags. One small extra to expect: if your driver takes the Bali Mandara toll road to skip traffic, the toll of around IDR 15,000 is usually not included, and you will be asked to cover it in cash at the gate. It saves a few minutes at busy times and very little at quiet ones.
Can you use Grab or Gojek from Bali airport?
Yes. Both apps operate at DPS, but they pick up from designated zones rather than the kerb outside arrivals: you book in the app, walk a few minutes to the marked pick-up point and meet your driver there.

At the international terminal, follow the Grab or Gojek signs through the arrivals retail area out to the pick-up zone; both firms run small staffed lounges on the way where you can sit down and get help placing the ride. Airport pick-ups carry a surcharge on top of the normal fare, which is why this leg costs more per kilometre than the same car ordered in town, and app prices shift with demand, so the fare you see at 02:00 will not match the one at 17:00.
Two honest caveats. Do not plan on a motorbike pick-up from the terminal with luggage; the apps steer airport rides to cars, and rightly so. And after a red-eye landing with tired children and two trolleys, the walk to the ride-hailing zone is exactly the moment a pre-booked driver holding a name board earns its extra hundred thousand rupiah.
Is Sanur closer to the airport than Ubud or Canggu?
Considerably. Sanur sits on the same coast as the airport, 25–30 minutes up the bypass in normal traffic, while Ubud is an hour or more inland and Canggu is a longer run through some of the island's worst traffic.

Since September 2025 Indonesia has merged its customs, health and immigration declarations into a single free online form, the All Indonesia Arrival Card, which every traveller completes within three days before arrival. Most visitors also need a visa on arrival, which can be bought online in advance as an e-VOA to skip a queue. These rules genuinely change, so check an official source shortly before you fly rather than trusting a travel article, including this one.
Cash is worth a thought too. Airport exchange rates are rarely the best available, and there are ATMs and money changers in Sanur, so changing a small amount at the airport and the rest in town is the usual approach. Keep some smaller notes handy for the toll and tips.
